Refining Powerlifting Coaching

The ONE question every powerlifting coach should be asking their athletes in order for them to get the best results possible.

I work with a team of powerlifting coaches. On top of myself and Josh, StrongerYou is also composed of two great coaches: Chad and Jeff.

Years back, one of my weakest points as a coach (a quite introverted one at that) was not asking enough questions from the lifters I would work with to get the fullest picture of what they need.

It’s possibly one of the most overused questions out there, but when asked properly it’s the most effective ones you can ask.

“What do you need from me to make sure you succeed?”

It seems so obvious, but it’s easy to fall into the thought trap of “I’m the coach, I know best” and while there is some weight to that statement, if you don’t know exactly where your lifter is lacking, how can you really know where you can help them and which areas to provide your expertise in?

The best thing I’ve learned from working with my team is learning their questioning and assessment process. How they conduct a needs analysis when they start working with a lifter is second to none.

As a coach, the clearer of an idea you can have of exactly what the lifter needs, the less anxiety there is around designing a new process, the more precise you can be with your efforts and overall you can be more effective.

I feel like a broken record sometimes but that two-way relationship that is coaching really needs to have open and complete communication to really get the best results for both parties.
