3 Mental Tools for Powerlifting Training

Mindset is one of the keys to unlocking your powerlifting potential and pushing through. Find out how.
  1. Find your reasons for your goals

Goals are great, but digging deeper into the reasoning behind them is even better. Want to squat 500? Build your Powerlifting total to a new all time PR? Go deep. Discovering your WHY can build incredible resolve and help you to find the best path to your goal instead of solely focusing on a destination where there are multiple ways to get there.

What does that do for you?

Let’s say you end up squatting 500 next week. What’s the best part about that for you?

Does squatting 500 impact you in other areas of your life outside of the gym? How so?

Finding your WHY lets you find the best means to your end. For some, powerlifting competition is the way, for others, it is not.

  2. What’s the cost of NOT getting to where you want to be?

The benefits of the work you’re doing aren’t always as immediately apparent as the perceived gain of falling off track and doing something easier. Put things into perspective with these questions:

Why even bother trying to make a change? What is NOT being at your goal costing you in your personal life right now? What if you didn’t change at all?

Are you feeling a lack of confidence in your day to day life that impacts how well you interact with others in a work setting? Does that put your next promotion opportunity in jeopardy?

Are you trying to set an example for your kids on goal setting and achievement?

If you didn’t actively pursue your goal, where would you be a year from now? Would you be injured, weaker, unemployed, happier, sadder, etc?
  3. Ask yourself “WHY” in the moment.

A trick commonly used by Navy SEALs when they are training.

When you start feeling like it’s getting damn hard and you question the value of the work you’re doing, falling back on this simple question can start to give you an increased sense of control over the situation.

When you sense you have CONTROL over what’s going on, you’ll be more productive, try harder and can harness that “grit” that is so sought out. Knowing you are working hard not just for the sake of it, but as an action towards your end goal makes doing that work that much easier.
